  • DESCRIPTION

    This variety of Berberis thunbergii or 'Japanese barberry' is a dense, deciduous shrub with leaves red-pink mottled with white splotches. Stems have sharp thorns. Fragrant yellow flowers appear in summer, followed by glossy-red berries.

    Tolerates light shade, but needs full sun to develop best foliage colour.

    It is very adaptable to both dry and moist growing conditions, but will not tolerate sitting in water. Forms an excellent hedges, barriers or stand-alone ornamental specimen.

    This shrub is hardy, can withstand temperatures of -15c, is easy-to-grow and will require little maintenance.

    This berberis thrives in most soil conditions, just be sure to keep moist yet provide sufficient drainage. The plant will also appreciate a space with access to full sun and produce brighter colours.

     Cut back dead branches in late Winter to prepare for new growth in Spring.

    Grows to a mature height of 1 - 1.5m/ width 0.5 - 1m, over 10 years.
